Austin Northcutt probably won't be attending his classes at Easley's Gettys Middle School on Friday. And on Monday, the school officials probably won't accept- the eighth-grader's excuse from the flagman.

If Northcutt, 14, makes the field for the Pro All Star Series Howler 150 lap race at Greenville Pickens Speedway on Saturday night, his absence won't be excused, but he would be forgiven.

On Saturday, he's going to be driving the Robert Hamke Super Late Model Chevrolet, trying to qualify for the Howler. He has never raced in a Late Model, but he has tested this car at Peach State Speedway in Georgia as well as Anderson Motor Speedway and GPS.

"Greenville-Pickens is a fast track," Northcutt said. "You can carry a lot more speed into the corners, and I've been trying to adjust for that. I'm just going to try as hard as I can to qualify and make the field, and see what happens in the race. It's a long race. I'm excited."

Northcutt, while in the middle of his eighth grade school year, is still not sure what direction he wants his life to go, because in addition to racing, he is also very interested in baseball and golf He tries to play golf two days a week and played junior varsity baseball last year.

"I also play on a traveling baseball team," Northcutt said.

Northcutt has been racing since he was 5. He started out. in Quarter Midgets, moved up to Bandoleros for a short time, then moved on to racing a Mustang in Mini Stock. He won the Young Guns division at Anderson two years ago, moved up to mini-stocks this year and won seven times.

His father, David, said he had gotten Austin a Late-Model Stock car to compete at GPS, but the track prohibits drivers younger than 16 from competing in the series it sponsors.

"The only reason we can race this week is because the PASS series is in charge of the track," David Northcutt said. "We are entering this race to get Austin more comfortable driving cars with lots more power so he will be ready and able when his time comes to compete regularly."

The Howler 150 qualifying begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, and the evening of racing will complete GPS's 2008 season. In addition to the PASS cars, there will be Allison Legacy racing and two heat races and main events in Charger and Renegade divisions.

September 5, 2008 - Austin lined up 6th out of 17 cars to take the green flag in the feature. As he started to pull away his car stalled. Thinking it was the battery he got a push from Avery Burgess in the 4 car. As he came around to the back stretch his car quit again. He brought it in the pits to discover that it had trash in the carburetor. He would go three laps down before being able to get on the track. He went out and settled at the rear but not for long. He made his way through the field to the front passing the 3rd place car. If only it had been a 100 lap race. This was some of the most exiting racing that Austin has experienced. He knew he was 3 laps down but was just having fun seeing how many cars he could pass. Hopefully the crew has the car top notch for the race this week. Hope to see everyone there.

He started in the back of the field in the feature (14th) and worked his way up to 3rd again when the 4th place car got loose and nudged his bumper and spun him out. He went to the back again and finished in the 9th position. Just not a good night for the 29 team. Congratulations to Chad Black for the official win.
